If Apple ever did go out of business, Microsoft would become a monopoly as a provider of desktop operating systems under US law, and would face antitrust litigation.

As far as a takeover, when one US business merges with another, be it through a buyout, a takeover, or any other method, that merger has to be approved by the Federal Trade Commission. Anything that has the potential of limiting competition in an industry, such as a merger of the only two commercial makers of desktop operating systems, would likely not be approved. Honestly, I doubt Microsoft would even be allowed to own a stake in Apple.

Oh, explain ? Sounds interesting. I didn't think they could anyway because there had to be two competitors in computers.

RE: Could Windows by Mac if they wanted?
Microsoft and Apple have a long continuing partnership, generally to the benefit of both companies. Microsoft has $150 million stake in Apple, and the two have a partnership to release Microsoft Office for Mac.

The Apple || was one of the greatest personal computers ever released - and it was indirectly authored by Microsoft. Apple developed a program language to use for the Operating System but it was not what they needed - so Microsoft came in and sold Apple the programming language which was used (which they ironically called Applesoft).

The two companies are almost symbiants, and if one benefits, so does the other.

There, fixed.

Hilarious.

I did not realize that Microsoft and Apple got on like that, I thought they were true competitors. Very interesting stuff.
