Cloud Hosting
Has anyone clicked onto cloud hosting yet? I see more and more providers offering it now and I wonder how it performs compared to normal shared hosting or a VPS.
Let us know what you think about it all and your experience. |

RE: Cloud Hosting

RE: Cloud Hosting
When we refer to something as being in the cloud we mean it is stored on the internet and so can be retrieved from any computer or device. Web based email is in the cloud, documents stored on Google docs or similar are in the cloud. Web hosting is, by it's very nature, in the cloud.

RE: Cloud Hosting
Cloud hosting actually has so many definitions, everytime I visit WHT there's someone posting a new one. However, cloud hosting is generally where multiple servers are grouped together so when a user uploads a website their files are distributed across multiple server - The same with their database, email etc, you get the idea.
This means if a server goes down, or a peice of hardware fails somewhere; there will be (almost) no downtime because another server will takeover that role within the matter of seconds. |

RE: Cloud Hosting
Sounds like RAID to me. But given they intend to host the same files across multiple servers you are going to be talking at least twice as many servers and therefore twice as much cost.

RE: Cloud Hosting
Yeah, exactly. I guess it's mainly for sites that need 100% uptime.
I found a definition on a cloud providers website, which says: The cloud features a central storage setup, with hyper visors to provide the memory and CPU power you need. Should a Hyper Visor fail or go offline, your data is just fine, and is quietly moved to another Hyper Visor to resume its operations. (Taken from Virpus.com) |

RE: Cloud Hosting
Cloud hosting? For the first time I hear of it. That's obviously new, isn't it?

RE: Cloud Hosting
I think its just the next logical steps for hosting, it needs to have more facilities for when stuff does go down
