Trojan Horse "Mac Defender"

Quote:The trojan horse is called Mac Defender. It's a web pop-up containing a spoof message that tells customers their machines are infected by a virus and they must install anti-virus software. If customers agree to install the software, the program sporadically loads porn websites on their computer.

The inevitable has happened, someone decided to target Mac users. It doesn't look like it's such a problem, since there has been only 200 reported cases of this to Apple.

What do you think?

Oh you caught me! I confess to lying to my connections on CNN. Oh you.

But back on topic - this looks like the beginning of something and has reality set in about computers, that everything out there isn't 100% safe. I'm sure it did open some eyes on the subject.

I lol'd. Everybody thinks that having OSX makes them impenetrable (oh jeez, I'll download this file from this weird site I've never been too, not like it'll do anything). This shows that it's not that OSX was impenetrable, it's just more profitable for hackers to spend time with Windows.

RE: Trojan Horse "Mac Defender"
If I had a Mac, I'd get an anti-virus anyway, same with any other operating system and especially Windows.

RE: Trojan Horse "Mac Defender"
What makes me laugh about this is that as usual, Apple did a complete 180 when dealing with this. They were first instructed not to help customers with removing it, then all of a sudden change their ways and not only offer instructions on how to get rid of it, but an update that wipes it from the system.

This is only the start of things to come, and I'll be sitting here laughing at fanboys when they find out their Macs aren't so immune to viruses as God.. sorry, I meant Steve Jobs.. makes them out to be.

RE: Trojan Horse "Mac Defender"
one thing worth noting is that it still require user interaction before you get infected.
also this isn't technically a virus but mallware as it does not try to spread from the infected computer after infiltration.

RE: Trojan Horse "Mac Defender"
Self replicating viruses are pretty rare these days with malware being more common. Most anti-virus heuristics will pick up any self replicating code. What we are mostly seeing now is malware downloaded from websites (fake AV being #1) and trojans usually sent in emails.
