there was rumours going around that microsoft does own a lot of apple, but as far as i know it isnt the case

yes they could, but thank god they dont. i like my multitasking and being able to install what i want Smile

apple is just plain shit, and reminds me of all those evil guys you see in movies, who want to take over the world etc

I just got from one of the main shopping centres in Bristol, The Mall. Since I was last there the HMV has become an Apple store :|

Do you mean, could Microsoft buy Apple? No, they couldn't. In fact, several years ago, Microsoft poured a lot of money into Apple just to keep the company afloat. If Apple ever did go out of business, Microsoft would become a monopoly as a provider of desktop operating systems under US law, and would face antitrust litigation.

As far as a takeover, when one US business merges with another, be it through a buyout, a takeover, or any other method, that merger has to be approved by the Federal Trade Commission. Anything that has the potential of limiting competition in an industry, such as a merger of the only two commercial makers of desktop operating systems, would likely not be approved. Honestly, I doubt Microsoft would even be allowed to own a stake in Apple.

Hmm I highly doubt that Microsoft would fece anti trust litigation just because Apple went belly up. If nothing else there are many variations of Linux available.
