Microsoft make money from their software in other computers?
I know Microsoft don't make their own computers, so they make money by licensing their software (WIndows 7 etc) to be used by other manufacturers ? How much would they make by doing that/

If memory serves with XP the manufacturers were quoting that £70 of the sales price was for Windows. I think it's cheaper now because they no longer supply you with a physical copy of Windows as back up but instead just have the files on a recovery partition.

would it be much cheaper by creating a recovery partition instead of supplying a cd? i cant imagine it would make too much difference, with the prices of CDs being as low as they are.

When I bought my laptop (just over a year ago), it was supplied with no kind of disc whatsoever. The only way to reinstall the OS was to hit F8 during startup, which was basically on a recovery partition. Within the default OS it was supplied with, they offered a backup utility, where it would copy everything on the recovery patition onto DVD. That way, if anything went wrong I could use the DVD to reinstall the OS. I wouldn't use their crappy default one anyway, it's overloaded with their own software which you don't need. |

i seem to have 2 different programs on here i can make a backup disc with. (mine also has a recovery partition instead of a supplied CD btw)

actually MS don't care wether or not there is a disk with the machine, the license fee is the same for them, as previously it was the computer manufacturer that produced and printed the disks bundeled.
