Gone are the days when a big TV was 36 inches. 42 and 50 are not considered “average size” right now. Thanks to 4K resolution and ultra-slim designs, modern TVs have larger screens but take up less space. If you’re thinking about getting a new TV, you may be wondering how big you can go. The answer may be bigger than you think. It may not be a wall-sized TV or a TV that looks like a wall, but a 65- or 75-inch TV will fit perfectly in most homes.
Our general advice is very simple: get as big a TV as possible. The long answer depends on your room, the distance between your seats, and the acceptance rate of your roommates.
Ask TV and theater industry groups, and they’ll tell you to measure the distance between seats to determine the ideal screen size. Obviously, the further away you sit, the smaller your TV looks. The ideal is to have a screen that fills a certain portion of your field of vision, but “ideal” is up for debate.
THX, for example, recommends multiplying the distance (in inches or centimeters) by 0.835. This takes the recommended screen diagonal. So if you’re like most people and sit about nine feet (108 inches) from your TV, THX offers a screen that’s about 90 inches diagonal. So, yes, the big 65-inch TV you’re looking at isn’t “too big,” at least as far as THX is concerned.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers recommends a viewing angle of 30 degrees, slightly lower than THX. To match the SMPTE recommendation, multiply the seat distance by 0.625. So, given our nine-foot example, that means about a 68-inch TV (so a 65- or 70-inch model will work).
While these are good guidelines, don’t take them as hard and fast rules. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the numbers game when the reality is much more complex. There are additional factors in the game.
Almost all new TVs have 4K Ultra HD resolution. Their number reaches 8 thousand. Only the smallest and most expensive models are still HD only (1080p or 720p).
To see all the detail available in a 4K or 8K resolution image, you need to be sitting very close or have a very large TV. In fact, if you’re sitting nine feet away, even “big” TVs are too small to see the full resolution they’re capable of. Or in other words, the resolution of the next TV will be sufficient unless you are sitting very close or have a very large TV (over 100 inches). Yes, you don’t need an 8K TV. If you want to know how far you have to sit before you can’t see individual pixels, Sony offers the following chart.

The flip side is that a large TV with low-quality content will show a lot of problems. If you notice stuttering, video noise, or other artifacts while watching shows and movies on your current TV, a larger model will show more of these issues. Eagle-eyed viewers who want a bigger TV should look to better video options like 4K streaming and Blu-ray to deliver.
Another important factor to consider is what I call “room mastery.” How big does the TV have to be so that the black rectangular panel looks like the only thing in the room? This factor is definitely subjective. As someone who’s had a 12-foot-wide projection screen at home for over a decade and reviewed large TVs, I’ll take a large projection screen TV any day (especially since the “TV” was off, the projector screen was white or gray, and the TV was glossy black). A TV over 80 inches can easily dominate the space. A wall mount might help a bit, but you run the risk of your TV room turning into a TV room.
When in doubt, try gluing or cutting cardboard to the size of the TV you’re considering and see how it looks in your room. You may want to paint it or put a black cloth on it. This is what it looks like when it’s off (despite features like Samsung’s Ambient Mode). This may not interest you, but it will for some. Once you get inside the TV, you’ll find that it’s much cooler and brighter than cardboard. It also looks a lot bigger. This of course depends on your room, the decor, and the opinions of others sharing the same room.
To be honest, I don’t subscribe to any of the set “rules” for viewing distance and screen size. I think the SMPTE and lower THX numbers are too biased TV. I think they underestimate what is easily possible with modern technology for those who want more.

I sit nine feet from the 102 inch screen. It’s only a 16 x 9 piece. The full screen is 2.35:1 and measures 128 inches diagonally. I can barely make out the pixels when zooming the 1080p projector to the full width of the screen, but I can’t on a standard 16×9 display. 4K looks great. Watching TV this size is addictive and I love it.
I say this as proof that you can be much bigger than most people think is possible. Check out how cheap and bright projectors have become. We’ve reviewed a ton lately and have a list of the best projectors and the best 4K projectors in general.
Want to be that big? Well, that’s another question. I find that larger screen sizes are easier on the eyes because the roughly uniform brightness of the screen takes up more of your field of view. In a dark room, thanks to the large screen, your pupils will naturally close to the amount of light.
Conversely, watching a small screen in a dark room is more tiring to me because your pupils are exposed to bright light (the TV) (because it’s a dark room). Many people complain of headaches when watching TV in a dark room. One possible reason is the hundreds of nits of an HDR TV occupying only a small portion of your field of view. Imagine if someone shone a flashlight into your eyes while you were in the dark for an hour. With a projector, you have much less light than a TV, and it spreads over a larger area of vision.

True polarized lights, leaving the room lights on and turning off the LCD backlight will reduce fatigue or better than the big screen, but I
The final decision is personal preference. My goal here was to give a rough idea of what is possible or recommended. For me, I would always err on the side of “too big”. My old boss used to say that no one regrets buying a TV they thought was “too big”. I think a 50 inch TV is too small for most rooms. That’s not to say that everyone should have a 102-inch screen, but the reality is that a 50-inch flat panel isn’t much bigger than the 36-inch CRT of old. With 65-inch and even 75-inch TVs now much more affordable, it’s worth considering if you have the space.
If you want to go big and control the ambient light in your room, consider a projector.
