How Much Horsepower Does A Wrx Have
Today’s WRX and WRX STI models are more than tuned economy cars. Each of these Impreza branches has its own turbocharged engine and advanced all-wheel-drive system to minimize excess power, making it a great option for those looking for performance in a more practical package than a muscle car. They also offer an all-weather capability not found in rear-wheel drive cars, and can reach 60 mph in a similar or even less time.
Subaru Wrx Sti Getting A Little Bit More Power?
It’s true that the 2016 Subaru WRX and WRX STI share bits and pieces with other Subarus. The body is lifted from an Impreza sedan; The heart of the WRX comes from Car Connect’s best car to buy in 2014, the Subaru Forester. And standard all-wheel drive? This is a key for all Subarus except the BRZ.
Step up to the more expensive STI and you get a little more distance from the mainstream. While both the WRX and STI are built on a stiffer, more special version of the Impreza’s body, the STI adds chassis bracing, a 305-horsepower engine, its own special gearbox, a stiffer suspension, better brakes and many others. Customizable all-wheel drive system that enthusiasts who crave track time will appreciate.
Make it big and make it boxy; This is the styling principle of the new WRX, at least at the front end where the air intakes don’t look so big or the fenders quite pronounced. Subaru says the deep front air dam and grille aren’t the only changes that make it: The WRX gets its own hood, fenders, bumpers and lights to set it apart from the Impreza. Key details include a deeper (and functional) hood, LED low-beam headlights on upgraded models and new 17-inch wheels as standard. Somehow, in all these places, it still feels a bit dull – not nearly as compelling as the absurd mechanics that lie beneath the skin. The STI gets a large wing back, though for 2016 the STI Limited can be optioned with a low-profile trunk spoiler that draws a little less attention to the car.
Inside, the WRX claims a nearly one-inch longer wheelbase, which translates into more interior space in a better-finished cabin than the last-generation Impreza and WRX. On the WRX, sports seats are specified and covered in grippy upholstery. A power driver’s seat is an option, as is leather upholstery if you absolutely need them for your next rally. Unlike the last WRX, the new car gains nearly two inches of rear-seat legroom and slightly more trunk space. The STI gets some nicer trim as well as an illuminated shift knob.
All New Subaru Wrx Sti To Get 400 Hp 2.4l Turbo Engine?
The WRX uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-4 engine with a twin-scroll intercooler and turbocharger, as well as direct injection. Power output is set at 268 hp, while peak torque of 258 lb-ft is delivered from 2,000 to 5,200 rpm. Unlike the Forester’s version of the same engine, the WRX’s engine has unique cam profiles and valve-spring rates.
The engine is mated to either a manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT), a first for the WRX – and the transmission option connects drivers to different versions of Subaru’s signature all-wheel drive. The CVT gets a set of eight preset transmission ratios that give it the feel of a manual transmission, in Sport Sharp mode, or typical CVT response when left in Intelligent mode, offering six gear-like gears in a Sport mode intermediate. This WRX also features a 45/55 rear-biased all-wheel drive system with variable side-to-side torque distribution, with the ability to redirect torque based on cornering force and inputs from steering wheel. The WRX also gets electric power steering and a sport-tuned suspension, all fitted with 17-inch 45-series tires.
The result: a car that matches gas-saving features with aplomb. It still absolutely burns up the road unlike anything in its class – maybe a Focus ST has acceleration and grip, but not the beautifully balanced handling and perfect steering of the WRX. Braking isn’t as great as we’d hoped thanks to the now excellent pedal feel and tidier stops of most rivals.
Subaru Wrx: New Platform, Bigger Engine, And 271 Hp
As for the STI, it feels sharper and livelier, but not quite as quick. It carries over with the same 2.5-liter turbo flat-4 as last year, producing 305 hp and 290 lb-ft. It is mated to an advanced 6-speed manual gearbox, and power is delivered through a special driver-controlled center differential, which comes with a front limited-slip helical differential and a rear Torsen limited-slip differential. With it you get bigger Brembo brakes, firmer suspension tuning (with revised front geometry) and hydraulic steering with quicker ratios.
With new features and much-improved performance, and if prices have risen only marginally (with the base manual WRX just $27,390), the 2015 WRX looks to be a stronger performance value than ever – and one you can drive all the way year, other Unlike many performance models.
Among other features, the WRX now comes with standard automatic climate control; a flat-bottom steering wheel that tilts and telescopes; bluetooth; and steering wheel audio and phone controls.
In the STI, you get plenty of other goodies, like leather and faux-suede seats, dual-zone climate control, an upgraded center console, and LED headlights and turn signals; And these help to completely erase some of the price differences.
Subaru Wrx Sti: Making The 2021 Subaru Brz And Toyota 86 Capable Of 400 Horsepower
Key options on the WRX include a power driver’s seat; heated front seats; a hatch; Keyless ignition; and a premium sound system with nine speakers, 440 watts of sound, navigation and Aha Radio smartphone connectivity.
Changes for 2016 include more available safety features and new infotainment systems across the line, as well as the STI’s aforementioned under-the-radar spoiler. Subaru’s camera-based EyeSight safety suite is now available on the WRX Limited with the Lineartronic CVT, enabling adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keep assist. It’s included in a package that includes navigation and blind spot monitoring, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert. Some of these items are also available in the STI top.
All WRX and STI models now come with at least a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while navigation-equipped models move to a 7.0-inch screen. The units run Subaru’s new software, a slight upgrade from the previous systems, which were a bit slow and difficult to navigate.
And on the performance side, WRX Premium and Limited models now come standard with 18-inch wheels wrapped in summer performance tires.
The 2022 Subaru Wrx Has Arrived, And Yes, It Still Has A Manual

While Subaru WRX models have always attracted attention with their looks, it hasn’t always been the right kind of attention. To many, it looks just like a car where most of the development money was spent on the drivetrain, and it is to an extent.
It’s not as grim as it sounds, but the WRX isn’t the queen of the competition, even if it’s built from Impreza-sedan bedrock. Like the rest of the Subaru range, it has become more refined and discreet. For the WRX, Subaru takes that basic outline and adds wider air intakes—were they that big? – and a number of other subtle changes. Beyond the roof and trunk lid, every metal panel has been tweaked to look wider and bolder. Even now, the WRX is nowhere near as kit-car as it was a decade ago.
The STI variant wears a larger wing to distinguish it from the WRX and Impreza. For 2016, though, the top STI can be optioned with a low-profile trunk spoiler like the WRX, perhaps for those who think the tradition-rich shelf car brings too much bad attention.
Subaru Wrx Starts At $29,105 And Boasts 271 Hp
To put all that money into the undercarriage, the models are no longer offered as hatchbacks, with Subaru focusing on just one body style and saying the hatch won’t be making a comeback. That may change, of course, as the last WRX was essentially hatch-only and a sedan variant sprouted up towards the end of the generation.
