The recommendations above represent the average amount of sleep required for these ages. However, please note that there is a normal range as some children need more or less sleep. Your child’s schedule can change and that’s normal.
Ideally, your 7-month-old sleep schedule will allow for at least 14 hours of sleep per 24-hour period, which is in line with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s recommendations for this age. We recommend aiming for 11 – 12 hours at night and 2.5 – 3 hours during the day, divided into three naps. However, you may find that your baby’s nighttime sleep becomes shorter until they skip the third nap altogether in the next month or two.
This happens when the baby needs more time to wake up between naps but isn’t ready to fall asleep – resulting in a nap later in the night.
If your baby has switched to 2 naps and you suddenly notice an increase in night wakings (or early wakings), oversleeping may be to blame. Give 3 naps two or three times a week to help “recycle” excesses and get them back on track.
