Load Range E Tire Pressure – Dimensional information molded into the tire sidewall provides important details about the tire. Knowing how to decipher the data will give you a better understanding of a tire’s purpose, dimensions, load capacity, speed, and more.

Some tire sizes begin with a letter that identifies the type of vehicle and/or service for which they were designed. Common letters for passenger car and light truck tires are P, LT, T, and C.

Passenger car tires designed to Tire and Wheel Association (TRA) standards begin with the letter P and are known as P metric tires.

Passenger car tires designed to European Tire and Rim Technical Organization (ETRTO) standards start with a letter. These sizes are known as solid metric or eurometric tire sizes. Euro metric sizes are dimensionally equivalent to P metric sizes, but usually have slightly different load capacities.

Light truck tires designed to TRA standards often begin with the two letters LT. LT means a light truck metric size tire designed for use on pickup trucks with higher payload and towing capacities than passenger cars.

In older sizing conventions, the LT designation may be at the end of the tire size. These dimensions are known as the floating light truck dimensions. An example of this type of size convention is 35×12.50R17LT.

A tire size that begins with a T means that the tire is a temporary or mini spare. This type of tire is intended for temporary use only until the tire is repaired or replaced.

Eurometric sizes designed for hauling heavy loads and trailers often end with the letter C. C means the tire is commercial tread and designed for vans or delivery trucks capable of carrying heavy loads. 195/70R15C is an example of this type of size convention.

A three-digit number that specifies the width of the tire section in millimeters. The actual tire may not match this exactly, but it is close.

The two digits after the section width indicate the aspect ratio of the tire. Aspect ratio is simply identified as a percentage of section height divided by section width. In the example below, the tire aspect ratio is 70%, so the tire section height is 129.5 mm. The higher the aspect ratio, the taller the sidewall of the tire.

The letter R following the tire aspect ratio indicates that the tire construction is a radial tire. On rare occasions, D recognizes bias layer structures where the bodies intersect diagonally.

In recent years, ETRTO has adopted the F brand standard, which allows tire manufacturers to identify free-standing, run-on design tires within a tire size specification.

The last two digits of the tire size indicate the rim diameter or wheel size for which the tire is designed.

The two or three digit number after the ring diameter and the letter next to it is known as the service description. The service description shows the load index, which defines the maximum load capacity of the tire, and the speed rating, which defines the maximum speed allowed.

This table shows the load index and maximum load capacity of typical passenger car tires. The maximum load capacity at maximum pressure is also on the side of the tire. In this example, a load index of 116 on a P265/70R17 of 116 translates to a maximum load of 2,756 pounds per tire.

Passenger tires are identified on the sidewall as Light Road (LL), Standard Road (SL), or Extra Road (XL). This is the same for both P metric and Euro metric sizes, although the inflation pressure at full load is slightly different between the two.

Light truck tires are identified by a load range from load range B to F. Each load index for light truck sizes is also identified by two numbers. The first number is the maximum load on one wheel and the second number is the maximum load when using multiple lanes. In this example, 121/118 represents a maximum load of 3,197 pounds for single applications and 2,910 pounds for dual applications.

A tire’s maximum load is the maximum weight that the tire is designed to carry. Since tire load capacity is related to tire size and the actual air pressure used, the maximum load is evaluated by inflating the tire to the industry specified air pressure.

Never exceed the vehicle’s maximum payload as stated on the vehicle’s placard or owner’s manual. Never exceed the load capacity printed on the tire sidewall. The maximum load can only be carried at the maximum cold pressure indicated on the tire sidewall. Overloading can cause excessive heat build-up, damage to internal structures, and lead to tire failure.

This next table shows the speed performance of the tire. A speed rating was developed to match the speed of tires to the maximum speed of the vehicle in which they are used. The speedometer does not indicate vehicle speed, only maximum tire capacity.

Never exceed legal speed limits or speeds determined by driving conditions, regardless of tire speed. Exceeding the tire speed limit can cause overheating and sudden tire failure.

If the tires are spinning because the vehicle is stuck in mud, snow, ice, etc., the speed should not exceed 35 km/h. If only one tire is spinning on the axle, its speed doubles. You can quickly exceed your speedometer and tire capacity. Do not allow anyone to stand behind the spinning tires when trying to push the vehicle. The speed and force can deflate and blow your tires, which can result in property damage, serious personal injury, or death to you or bystanders.

Tires can only support the weight of a vehicle when properly inflated. Automakers assign tire sizes to specific tire pressures to transport vehicles and passengers and to provide the best balance of handling, traction, fuel efficiency and durability. This air pressure will most likely be different than what is indicated on the sidewall. Maximum tire pressures and corresponding loads are indicated on the sidewalls, but recommended pressures are always found on a placard in the driver’s door panel.

If the tire size is changed, the correct air pressure is recommended to maintain the same amount of load. The higher the air pressure, the higher the load. This is why light passenger tires have a maximum load pressure of 35/36 psi and heavy duty passenger tires have a maximum load pressure of 41/42 psi.

Under- or over-inflating tires can lead to excessive heat build-up and damage to internal structures. Over-inflating tires increases the chance of a sudden impact causing the tire to cut, puncture, or burst.
